  1. Where is your club located?
Our range used to be located on the lower level of Don Montgomery (formerly Mid-Scarborough) Community and Recreation Center, at 2467 Eglinton Avenue East in Scarborough, Ontario. However, mayor Miller shut down this long standing smallbore rifle range ostensibly in order to reduce handgun violence in the city. We are now temporarily renting time at a range located on Broadview Avenue in East York.

  2. When was your club established?
In 1965. In 2005 we celebrated our 40th Anniversary.

  3. Who is in charge of your club?
The club is run by a voluntary, elected Executive Committee comprising: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, Chief Range Officer, Firearms Safety Officer, Competition Chairman, Membership Chairman and Supply Officer.

  4. What is your club’s safety record?
Our motto is “Safety First” and we have not had a single accident since our club was established.
    [top]
  5. How old do I have to be to join your club?
We accept members as young as 12 years of age. Of course, there is no upper age limit. Members between the ages of 12 to 17 years must have parental (or guardian’s) consent to join the Club.

  6. When does the membership registration start and end?
Registrations for the new club season begin, usually, on the first Saturday after the Labour Day holiday. However, you may join during the year, since we accept applications for membership on an ongoing basis through the year.

  7. Can my application for membership in your club be rejected?
Yes. This can happen at the discretion of our Executive committee, if the number of already accepted members reaches the point at which taking on new members will become detrimental to the operation of our club. Applicants who have been convicted of a criminal offense involving a firearm may also be denied membership.

  8. What is your membership fee and is it refundable?
While at our temporary location, we offer 3 membership types:
Yellow Card – this is the basic membership for all SRC members and will cost $20 per year for both adults and juniors. This membership is a social or support membership, indicating your intention to continue to support the club during our quest for a permanent range. There are NO shooting privileges with this membership. To shoot on Wednesday evenings, you will need to upgrade to one of the following:
White Card – this is similar to previous years, where members who do not have a firearms license, may use club equipment. This class of member cannot own or buy a firearm or ammunition. The annual fee for this membership is an additional $40. Also, if you are not a member of the CSSA, an additional $20 will be charged for personal liability insurance.
Blue Card – again, similar to last year, for those members who possess a valid firearms license, entitling them to purchase and use their own firearms and ammunition. The annual fee for this membership is also $40. However, you must join and maintain current membership in the CSSA ($45), which will provide personal liability insurance.
Once paid, the membership fee is nonrefundable.

No, but new (not renewing) members who join our club after June 1 will have their membership extended (at no additional cost) until the end of August of the following membership year.

  11. What does the membership fee cover?
It covers the Safety Course mandatory for each new member, the use of club facilities and equipment, accident insurance and SRC newsletter.

  14. Do I have to join any other shooting organization in order to become a member of your club?
Depending on your firearms licensing status and related insurance requirements, your membership in the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA) may be mandatory. Our members are also encouraged to join the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC). Membership in either or both organizations is mandatory for participants in certain competitions.

  15. Do I need to have any shooting experience to join your club?
Not at all. You will be provided with the training necessary for the safe enjoyment of target shooting sports.

  16. Can I see your range and ask questions before I decide whether to join your club?
Because of the limited space, and the limited shooting times (we use the range only on Wednesday evenings from 6 PM to 10 PM), we do not encourage uninvited drop-ins. Should you like to visit the range, it is suggested to arrange a scheduled visit with one of the executive members, or contact the membership chairman.

  23. Can I start shooting immediately after I complete an application form and pay my membership fee?

  24. Do you have a schedule of safety courses?
No. Usually we have a series of safety courses in September and October, at the beginning of our club season. Later during the year the safety courses are organized less frequently, as the demand warrants.

  25. Can I attend your firearms safety course first and then decide if I want to join your club?
Yes. You will be charged a $15.00 fee for the safety course, which will be applied to the balance of your membership fee if you decide to join our club.

  26. Do you offer Canadian Firearms Safety Courses?
No. For this purpose we can refer you to a licensed Firearms Safety Instructor.
    [top]
  27. Do you provide any target shooting coaching?
Yes. During the club year we periodically schedule a number of coaching sessions when interested members can, at no additional cost, train and receive instructions and advice from our coaches, who have many years of shooting experience and some of whom are or have been members of the Canadian National Shooting Team

  28. Once I become a member, when can I shoot?
We are currently renting range time from an existing private range. The time slot for our club is Wednesday evenings from 6 to 10 PM. Some other days (usually Sundays) are allocated for matches.

  29. Will your club provide me with the opportunities to compete?
Competitive shooting in the strength of our Club. For those who wish to test their skills against other shooters we organize and arrange participation in occasional club matches, LSBA matches, SFC and DCRA Postal matches, Canadian National Rifle Championships and Canadian Airgun Grand Prix. An out-of-town or province travel may be required to participate in some of these events.

  30. Is the cost of competitions included in my membership fee?
No. There is a separate nominal fee for each competition, to cover the administrative costs and the cost of awards.
    [top]
  31. What will I get to show my family and friends if I win a match or complete a shooting program?
Match winners are awarded engraved medals, plaques and trophies. Embroidered badges can be purchased on completion of each of a number of shooting programs.
    [top]
  32. Do you organize any social activities for members, their families and friends?
In the past at the old Don Montgomery range, there was an annual awards presentation and banquet for members and guests, held in May at the end of the Metro League season. In mid-December we used to organize our annual open Christmas Fun Shoot. This fund-raising event for the Canadian Cancer Society is followed by a buffet lunch. However, with the limited facilities at the temporary range, this has not been a regular offering.

  33. I would like treat my friend / client / business partner to an evening of target shooting at your range and to cover its cost. Can you accommodate such requests?
Unfortunately not. Although we are interested in promoting our sport and introducing it to a wide audience, the conditions of our liability insurance prevent us from organizing this kind of events.
