The Nineteenth Ontario Summer Games kicked off with a barbecue party on campus to feed the athletes before they were bused to the Opening Ceremonies in the Lynx Stadium.

Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, declared the Games officially open after a pair of parachutists jumped from a passing plane and brought down a couple messages. The messages turned out to be the promises for both athlete and official.

Square foam seats, which the athletes had been given to sit on during the ceremonies, were thrown into the air amidst loud cheers. A foam seat fight then ensued playfully between all the athletes and lasted throughout the night.

The evening was highlighted by the Ottawa based R & B phenomenon: Massari.

Thursday morning our rifle totin' athletes made their way to the Connaught Ranges early in the morning for some practice and the Individual Prone Match in the early afternoon. I and my SRC team mates scored as follows:

Graham McCord. . I-Jr-M 2nd 585x26
Matt Clark . . . I-Jr-M 5th 561x15
Leila Hockings . I-Jr-F 6th 551x7
Joshua Akow. . . . Jr-M 6th 552x11

The end of the day was wrapped up with a Much Music Dance across the road from Carlton University.

Half a dozen rifle shooters chose to go watch a movie instead and ride the O-train.

Friday morning our athletes were charged up for an exciting day of the Individual 3-Position Match. Everyone shot extremely well, I even shot a personal best in both prone and 3-P overall!.

Graham McCord. . 2nd 572x18
Matt Clark . . . 3rd 565x16
Joshua Akow. . . 3rd 545x9
Leila Hockings . 4th 558x13

Leila would like to point out to all who are reading, that one should follow their gut about targets. Second place in then 3-P event was held by Rebekah Wiebe with a score of 559x10. Being lazy, Leila did not go up and check her targets and thus barely missed achieving third place... by one point. Follow your gut, it's probably right.

[Editor’s Note: in other words, don’t be lazy...]

The 3-Position Team Match got off to a rocky start Saturday morning as athletes rushed to get their gear on the line and ready in time to start. Officials, however, were understanding and patiently gave the athletes a little more time to organize themselves. From the start of the first relay, the day proceeded smoothly.

West snatched up the gold with a score of 3375x88. Northeast skipped into steal silver with a total score of 3313x70. Central team, containing our own Scarborough trained athletes: Graham, Matt, Leila, and Josh, came in third with a 3179x89.

Melissa Morris took the award of Provincial Champion, beating everyone with a prone score of 591x30 and a 3-P score of 583x25. Congratulations Melissa.

A job well done to all athletes. Keep training hard for the next Summer Games. Good Luck!

Leila Hockings, Central Team
