PRACTICE DAYS

The ORA runs a significant number of Practice Days each year. This page briefly describes how that works.

If you have any questions about a practice day which this Web site does not answer for you please email your question to the ORA Secretary.

If you are a fully paid up member of the ORA and you have paid your Activity Fee for this year, then you do not need to pay any additional fees to attend any or all of the official ORA Practice days. If you are a member and have not paid the Activity Fee, you will need to do so before you use the ORA practice facilities.

Nonmembers can usually participate in ORA practice days, but are charged a fee as guests, typically for one visit only. If you plan to participate in more than one day we ask that you apply for membership. More details about membership and ORA events can be obtained at an ORA Introductory Day.

The Practice Day schedule is on the Web site in the Events page. The schedule notes the start time and we ask that attendees make sure they are there at that time to register and receive the range safety briefing and so that we can start shooting promptly.

Target Pulling (or butt duties) on practice days are the responsibility of the shooters. Typically a number of shooters will share a target and take it in turns to pull targets for each other. However, members have the option, should they so wish, to arrange for someone to pull targets for them all day. Please bear in mind that any shooter making such arrangements is responsible for the target puller all day and for making sure they have adequate transport and lunch arrangements. Target Pullers MUST wear hard hats when in the butts.

On occasion, Event Organizers will allow practice alongside their competitive events. It is always best to contact the organizer of an event well in advance if you wish to practice alongside as they may not be able to accommodate you and can advise you of any fee (for target pullers) that may apply. You can usually contact an event organizer through the ORA Secretary (via the Web site).

There is no special restriction on the caliber of rifle that may be used on practice days (other than the normal range restrictions), nor is there any restriction on the number of shots that can be fired. Usually, the day is organized so that there is an opportunity to change personnel in the Butts every hour or so throughout the day, with approximately an hour taken for lunch.

The Range will remain under the control of a Range Safety Officer and all participants must observe the Bolt Flag rules and ensure that their rifles are properly cleared onto and off on the firing point.
