ORA Annual Matches
Friday 6 August 2010
The 129th ORA Annual Prize Meeting got under way at Mons Range, CFB Borden, today. && target rifle shooters, including 46 cadets, shot today, with another 3-4 TR people expected tomorrow. There are 29 in F Class, split about evenly between the Open and Farquharson divisions. After several hot and humid days, and a high fire risk alert at Borden, today was blessedly cooler with a good breeze from the north west. Around midday, there was a short rain shower, but the rest of the day was mostly sunny.
Four matches were fired today. Excellent range management and butt marking meant that everything went smoothly with shooting finished by 4:30 pm. The lists of scores indicate how well many of the cadets are shooting. F Class scores may look a little lower than usual, but they are firing at a reduced size target, as will be the case in Ottawa next week.
Summary of Results:
The Gibson Match, 300 yards: TR winner Roger Mullin, Cobourg, 50.8V; F Class Paul Van Duyse, Ottawa, 47.7. Paul is firing in the F/F Class and beat out all the F/O shooters.
The Bankers' Match, 500 yards: TR winner George Wright, Toronto, 50.9; F Class Bob Raymond, Parry Sound, (also in the F/F Class) 50.5.
The President's Match, 900 yards: three-way tie in TR between Ryan Taylor, Kingston, Shannon Carlton, Innisfil, and Paul Tremblay, Quebec City, on 50.8; F Class Mark Iwanochko, Etobicoke, (also in the F/F Class) 49.5.
The Long Branch Match, 1000 yards: TR Stephen Hunt, Burlington, 505; F Class gordon Ogg, Water 49.5, who restore a little of the F/O Class's credibility.
The Friday Aggregate: TR 1st Fazal Mohideen, Pickering, 199.19 2nd Paul Tremblay 198.22; F Class Don McGinnis, Penetanguishene, (F/O) 191.19, 2nd Mark Iwanochko 190.15.
The forecast is good for tomorrow. Four more matches will be fired constituting the first part of the Lt. Governor's Match.
Saturday 7 August 2010
Day 2 of the 129th ORA saw some excellent shooting on a sunny day, with variable cloud and a changeable breeze. It was a bit warmer than yesterday, and tomorrow promises to be quite hot and humid.
Four matches were fired, with the aggregate constituting Part One of the Lt. Governor's Match. Scores were high and tie shoots will be needed tomorrow to determine several of the winners.
From yesterday's business, the tie-shoot for the Bankers' saw Shannon Carlton narrowly edging Ryan Taylor 25.4 to 25.3, with Paul Tremblay third on 24.3.
Matches today:
The Tait, 300 yards: TR, tie for 1st between Pat Vamplew, Paul Tremblay and Roger Romses, all on 50.8; F Class, tie between Paul Van Duyse and Terry Perkins also at 50.8, excellent scores from the F/F Class on the very tight target.
The Brassey, 500 yards: TR, tie between Scott Murray and Gary Bendik at 50.6; F Class winner (again from F/F) Darrin Stewart 49.4.
Macdonald Stewart, 600 yards: TR tie between Peter Westlake and Ryan Taylor at 50.8; F Class, winner Lou Slosel (F/F) 50.4.
John Brick, 900 yards: TR tie between Roger Romses and Ryan Taylor 50.8; F Class, winner Gordon Ogg 48.3.
Long Range Aggregate: TR winner Stephen Hunt 149.17; F Class Gordon Ogg 146.9.
Saturday Aggregate and Lt. Governor's Part One: TR, Roger Romses 199.29, Pat Vamplew 199.17, Ryan Taylor 198.25; F Class, Don McGinnis 192.12, Bruce Condie 191.11, John Kajfes 190.14.
In qualification for the Lt. Governor's Final tomorrow afternoon, scores of 188.10 or better are 'in', with a tie shoot for the last place between Cadets Ronald Copeland and Catherine Park. In F Class, five F/O are 'in' down to 186.11, and five F/F down to 179.5.
Tomorrow morning will have the Des Burke, which should not be rained out this year, to complete the Mercer Grand Aggregate, and the Coached Team Match. the Final is in the afternoon, followed by Prize Presentations.
Sunday 8 August 2010
When I said last night that the Des Burke would be fired today, it was
clearly in a rush of optimism fuelled, no doubt, by a good dinner at the
Borden Golf Club. I don't know what it is - the Des Burke Match itself,
firing on a Sunday, or just the quirks of nature - but our last day
seems fated more often than not. Today was no exception.
We got up to rain, and there were several bands of heavy showers from
then on. Anxious gazing at the sky, the weather radar from the Canadian
Met Office, and wishful thinking, allowed some sort of a day to be put
together. The Burke was first delayed, while tie shoots were held to
finish off yesterday's results. Then it was decided that the Burke and
the 1000 yard Team Match would be cancelled, and that the Lt. Governor's
Final would start early, to try to beat the next batch of showers. The
Final was fired, and in the end, of course, most of the rest of the
afternoon stayed dry - the heavy weather veering a bit to the north. Who
can forecast that sort of thing - predicting the weather is a mug's game!
All the results from yesterday have been updated, and the final lists of
aggregates declared. Roger Romses won the TR Lt. Governor's for the
second time in three years, having taken last year off. Don McGinnis won
the F Class division. Special prizes sponsored by McLennan Barrels,
Elwood Epps Sporting Goods and Berger Bullets were much appreciated
,especially by those who won them.
Don's victory came on top of his success in the F Class Mercer Memorial
Grand Aggregate. He had a very steady weekend on the tricky F Class
target, no necessarily winning matches, but scoring well towards his
aggregate all the time. In the TR section, the Mercer was won by ORA
Secretary, Fazal Mohideen, proving again that you really can combine
excellent shooting with hard work and dedication to the organisation of
the Association..Would that there were more who fell into the latter
category!
The large contingent of RCAC and ACF Cadets shot very well. Worthy of
note is the number of times that Ryan Taylor figured in 1st place tie
shoots. even though he did not win any of them, his performance shows
wonderful promise for the future. he was closely followed by several
other young shooters.
All in all, it was a good match and we can hope for a bit better
meteorological luck in 2011. ORA President, Adrian Praysner, was not
able to attend, due to a badly fractured ankle. The awards were made by
two CIC officers, Major Phil Lusk and Major Joe Tobin. This year is the
60th in which Edith Vamplew has been involved with the ORA and DCRA. A
special presentation was made to her in grateful recognition of this.
