ORA Annual Matches
Day 1 (Friday)
This was a good day for shooting. It had rained hard overnight and first thing in the morning, but then it cleared and we "enjoyed" mostly sunny day with a testing, blustery wind. Four matches were fired, several of which will require tie-shoots tomorrow to settle either the Target Rifle or F Class winners. The lists are attached, but here's a summary of the day:
The Gibson, 300 yards: TR winner - Scott Murray, Arnprior, 50.6; three are tied in F Class with perfect 60s - Gordon Ogg, Waterloo, Terry Perkins, Kincardine and John Kajfes, Pickering.
The Bankers', 500 yards: TR winner - Mike Wong Shui, Mississauga, 50.9; F Class winner - Mike Halmo, Tecumseh, 60.
The President's, 900 yards: tie for TR winner, Abdul Rahman, Scarborough, and Shannon carleton, Sutton West, both on 50.4; F Class winner - Bob Pastor, the viper from Gobles, Michigan, 60.
The Long branch, 1000 yards: TR winner - Bruce Bullock, Caledon, 50.2; tie in F Class with 58, between Terry Perkins and Norman Barber, Inglewood.
The Friday Aggregate: TR winner - Bruce Bullock, 197.14; tie in F Class between Bob Pastor and Gordon Ogg, 234/240.
The four ranges on Saturday constitute the first part of the Lt. Governor's Match.

Day 2 (Saturday)
This has been a rather frustrating day, with the weather playing a devious game. After a bright false start to the day, it clouded over and by 10:30 AM was raining hard. However, the two morning matches, the Tait and the Brassey were completed. it was then decided to break for lunch, rather than shooting on - so, of course, it partially cleared for a couple of hours. By the time the afternoon's proceedings started, it was raining lightly, with periods of heavier deluge. Hence, it was decided to complete the Macdonald, but to defer the Colonel Brick until tomorrow. That having been done and the range closed down, there were then another couple of hours without rain. Now, however, as I look out from the motel, it is once again pouring down. I think nearly everyone was pleased to stop, being quite wet enough. Several didn't bother to shoot in the afternoon. Stats had an interesting time with stacks of soggy cards, many of them pretty illegible. there may need to be some sorting out in the morning.
So tomorrow, we must fire the Brick to complete Part 1 of the Lt. Governor's, as well as the Des Burke in the morning. The Lt. Governor's final is in the afternoon. There are also several tie shoots to fire, especially amongst the F Class. They should occupy quite some time and use a lot of ammo. The Long Range Team Match will not be held this year. We can only hope for a reasonable day, although the forecast is not promising. But the pundits said it was not meant to rain much today, and they were wrong. Let us hope they are equally wrong in their rather more depressing outlook for tomorrow.
Today's Results.
The Tait, 300 yards: TR Winner - Andy Kolenko, Agincoiurt, 50.7; F Class tie - Don McGinnis, Penetanguishene, John Kajfes, Norm Barber, Bruce Condie, Kincardine, and Leo D'Amour, Laval, QC, all with 60/60.
The Brassey, 500 yards: TR winner - Mike Wong Shui 50.8; F Class tie - Norm Barber and Heinz Vollenweider
The Macdonald Stewart, 600 yards: TR winner - Roger Romses, Aurora, 50.8; F Class tie - Heinz Vollenweider, John Kajfes, Norm Barber, Mike Halmo, Gordon Ogg.

Day 3 (Sunday)
In my notes yesterday, I expressed the hope that the weather 'experts' would be wrong in their predictions for today ... well, they were mostly wrong, and thank goodness for that! the day started quite unpromisingly, with heavy rain as I tottered out of the motel around 6:45 AM. However, there was a brighter sky to the west, which looked hopeful. The start of shooting was delayed for half an hour to give things a chance to settle down, and after that, apart from the odd shower, we were OK. The afternoon, in fact, was positively sunny!
We fired the Des Burke at 600 yards first thing, followed by the John Brick, which had been held over from yesterday. Then there were several tie shoots, mostly involving the F Class group. the Lt' Governor's Final got underway about 3:00 PM, and we wrapped up the Prize Giving in sunshine before 6:00 PM.
Details of several of the events are in the attached files. Suffice to say that Roger Romses won the Lt. Governor's. Roger had gone into the final tied for 1st, shot a fine 73 at 1000 yards, and emerged the victor by two clear points. This was a popular win from one of Canada's most talented young shooters.
In the other major aggregates, Bruce Bullock won the (TR) Mercer and Ottawa, with Gordon Ogg taking the F Class honours. Cadets were very well represented in the prize lists.
All in all, in spite of the weather, this was a successful 3-day shoot. 108 people took part, with visitors from the USA, Jamaica and the UK, as well as from Quebec. Great credit is due to the Range, Butts, Office and Statistical Staff for a job well done.
