ORA 2007 Annual Matches

Day 1 - Friday August 10

A warm, sunny day on Mons Range at CFB Borden saw just under 100 competitors enjoy some challenging shooting. Conditions were fairly benign in the morning, but an increasingly gusty breeze in the afternoon made things quite interesting. It also kept the heat within reasonable limits. We have shooters from across Canada, including a large group of RCAC Cadets. In addition, we welcome visitors form Australia, Bermuda, Jamaica and the United States, plus a strong group of Army Cadet Force shooters from the UK.

Provisional results include:

  • Gibson Match (300 yards): Gary Bowman, Mississauga, 50.9; F Class Bob Pastor, Gobles, Michigan, a perfect 60.
  • Bankers' Match (500 yards):Pat Vamplew, Whitby, 50.9; F Class tie between Bob Pastor and Leo D'Amour, Laval, QC, 59.
  • President's Match (900 yards): Reece Fullerton ACF Cadet from Portadown Northern Ireland, 50.4; F class Leo D'Amour 60.
  • Long Branch Match (1000 yards): Fazal Mohideen, Pickering, 49.4; F class Leo again with 57.
  • Friday Aggregate: Faisal Rahman, Scarborough, 196.22; F Class who else but Leo 234.

Saturday's shooter form the qualifying stage for the Lt. Governor's Match, with the Final to be held on Sunday.

Day 2 - Saturday August 11

This was a much hotter day than yesterday, with less breeze (but see below). Thank goodness it was not overly humid. Temperature at the firing point were in the upper 30s. We were fortunate that a fire risk warning did not close the ranges. As it was four matches were completed in good time, thanks to the excellent work of CRO John Brooks and his crew. The butt markers did extremely well under trying circumstances.

I said it was not all that windy - true, for most of the time. But, especially in the afternoon, there were sudden swirls and gusts, some quite strong. One was sufficient to blow over a 'porta-loo', so what it did to people's shots at the time is anyone's guess.

In summary for the day:

Bruce Bullock won the first two TR matches - the Tait at 300y and Brassey at 500y - scoring 50.7 each time. The Macdonald Stuart at 600y was won by Keith Cunningham also with 50.7. And the John Brick winner was Martin Townsend, Captain of the GB Team for the World Championship in Ottawa starting next week, with 50.5.

In F Class, John Kajfes seeing red after some problems on Friday, won the Tait with 60, the Brassey with 59 (after a tie shoot with Tomasz Bledowski) ahd the Macdonald with 60. Norm Barber had a little revenge in the Brick scoring 58.

A number of Aggregates are now being resolved in the Saturday, Pat Vamplew, while not winning any of the four matches, did not drop a point to win with 200.21. John Kajfes took the F Class with 234.

The long range was won by Cadet Pascal Messiaen, Dippe, NB, with 145.9 - an excellent performance in the trick conditions, against some very experienced long range shots. Leo D'Amour proved that the experience does still count by taking the F class with 171.

The Mercer Aggregate, the ORA Grand, has Faisal Rahman leading the TR section with 344.33, from Nigel Ball, GB, 342.30, and Pat Vamplew 341.34. In F Class, Leo D'Amour leads with 404, from Terry Perkins 401 and Heinz Vollenweider and John Kajfes on 395. Much can still happen in the morning.

The top 40 TR and 6 F Class on today's aggregate qualify for the Lt. Governor's Final tomorrow afternoon. Scores are close at the top, so the result is very open!

Day 3, Sunday August 12

The day started sunny, but, by late morning, storm clouds had gathered and we had a good downpour for a couple of hours. This came in the latter stages of the Coached Team Match and delayed the start of the Lt. Governor's Final. The Des Burke Match, before the rain, was satisfactorily completed, as was the Final after the deluge. There were a number of unforeseen problems in the afternoon, which delayed the promulgation of results and thus the Prize Giving. However, in the end, all was accomplished and it was all over by 6 pm. Here, though, are some of the highlights of the day.

Pat Vamplew won the Lt. Governor's with 272.26, one point ahead of Fazal Mohideen, 271.26, with Nigel Ball, 270.20, third. It was a good close final, with the wind a little strange in the after effects of the storm. In the F class, John Kajfes maintained the good lead he had taken into the Final, emerging victorious with 322, Bob Pastor finished 2nd with 315, while Terry Perkins and Tomasz Bledowski had 312. John becomes the first winner of the F Class Championship Shield, so generously constructed and donated by Bob Pastor.

The 600 yard Des Burke Match in F class resulted in a three-way tie between Terry Perkins, Don McGinnis and John Kajfes, all scoring 89. John won the tie shoot. In the TR class, the winner was Cadet Edward Ferguson from Springhill, N.S., with a very fine 75.11. Roger Mullin won the NRA Silver Medal as the top Ontario shooter with 75.10.

Many aggregates were completed today. Notably: the Mercer, won by Nigel Ball (TR), 417.40, and Terry Perkins (F), 490; the Ottawa Pat Vamplew (TR) 466.43 and Terry Perkins (F), 542; and the Canada Dry (everything over the weekend) Nigel Ball (TR) 539.49 and Terry Perkins (F) 628.

So the 126th Matches have been successfully concluded. The match results appear below.
