The spring match on the Barriefield range in Kingston took place under auspicious weather conditions and the prying eye(s) of the water tower camera. Heck maybe there’s more than one! Did you ever think about that?
We had 19 target shooters on the playing field for the event coming from all walks of life. I’m not going to mention it… oh all right!... where were the rest of you? You missed a very good time. As I said the weather was great!
The first 300 yard relay got underway on time thanks to Dave Steed’s brilliant organizational skills. We even had a blow off period to start so thanks Dave! The winds were practically and that means for all intensive purposes extremely “light”. Must’ve been true as I cleaned that yardage.
We moved back to 500 yards and the wind started to pickup a bit. Naturally the mirage didn’t agree with the flags which is pretty normal for this range.
We then moved back to shoot what I thought would be two relays at 600 yards but it was elected to combine them into a single relay of 2 sighters and 15 for score. The winds were doing their usual Kingston nonsense, coming from behind us and quartering left and right. How’s that for accurate technical reporting? Almost as good as a weather report eh!
On the TR front Mr. Consistency otherwise known as Des Vamplew managed to surface on top in the Master class with his agg of 223 with 17 central veebulls. I love that word central. I mean where else are they going to be? Bob P… you weren’t there so no comment!
Looking over the scoring I could help but notice Peter Westlakes’ 74.7 and 74.7 and 74 7… gheeze maybe Des’s going to have to relinquish the name? Peter managed to come in 3rd with an agg of 222 with 21 central veebulls.
Alain Marion came in 2nd in the master class. Nice shooting Alain! Conspicuously missing from today’s winners was Pat Vamplew. Maybe that’s because P comes after D? Maybe I’d better leave that alone as I like mine where they are. It certainly wasn’t for Pat’s lack of V’s whew He piled up an impressive 25 of those central veebulls topped only by Roger Mullins 25 central veebulls. But as Tom Maynard so illustriously pointed out in his last conference post you can’t be dropping them Bull-fives in TR! Hey Tom where were you?
I had a pretty hard fought battle going on in F-Open with brutal competition from Norm Barber and Norm Barber and then there was…. Norm Barber! Yes folks we’re both still alive! Things got interesting when the target board came up with a slightly high and left shot that wasn’t my shot, wasn’t a Veebull, not even a Bull-five but something else. I’m not going there but it certainly meant that the game was going to be decided at the 600 yard markers. I started that relay off OK and then started dropping points but as luck would have it. I managed to hang on by a couple of points. I’ll go on record and say money did not change hands between self and the target puller! Someday you’re the bug and someday you’re the windshield!
Notable mention should go out to two relatively new shooters Steve Hunt and Sherry Power. Steve was trying his hand at TR shooting and from what I can see Steve will do well. Sherry was shooting in F-class with Norm and yours truly and she did great keeping up with us F-open types and she was shooting off a bipod! When it was her turn to shoot she fired away smartly. It’s really great seeing new faces on the firing line. I wish them both great success.
Other notable mentions go to Faisal Rahman a first in Expert Class and Mike Chung a first for F-M...
