Day 1

This was a great day for shooting - fine and sunny, not too hot or humid, with a moderate breeze, varying in direction and strength. All in all, this was Mons Range at its best!

The 125th ORA Matches - and few other Canadian sporting organisations can celebrate a 125th Anniversary - have an entry of just over 100, although not all are shooting the full three days. There is a large and welcome contingent of Canadian and British Cadets, as well as competitors from the USA and several Provinces of Canada.

Four matches were fired, under the capable direction of CRO John Brooks., at 300, 500, 900 and 1000 yards. It was a great achievement by Cadet Sebastien Desilets, from St-Hubert, Quebec, to win outright the 900 yard President's Match, scoring 50.3V in tricky conditions. He had the only 'possible' amongst all the target rifle shooters.

The forecast is great for the whole weekend. Tomorrow, Saturday, is the qualifying stage for the Lt. Governor's Final on Sunday.

Day 2

This was another near perfect day for shooting. Perhaps a little warmer than yesterday, but not humid, and with a changeable breeze. The latter made the long range match at 900 yards a good challenge.

Four matches were completed, at 300, 500, 600 and 900 yards. As the results lists will show, there are several tie shoots required tomorrow before the winners can be declared

The day's aggregate constitutes the qualifying stage for the Final of the Lt. Governor's Match. 40 Target Rifle shooters, and 6 F Class, will fire the final range at 1000 yards on Sunday afternoon. The top scores are pretty close which should produce a keenly contested final stage.

A brave group of 6 service rifle shooters fired the three shorter ranges. Enoch Wong beat out Tim Kagetsu by a single point.

Everything ran very smoothly, with few problems. Perhaps the most major little dramas were having to dig out Andy Kolenko's car keys when he dropped them down a gopher hole, and the collapse of the wheel of Colin Brown's cart, over which he is considering suing the Crown.

Tonight is the annual ORA Dinner at the Red Pine in Alliston, for which I must now prepare myself.

Day 3

It was a little warmer today, and the wind was the most difficult of the three days. Shooters in the Lt. Governor's Final in the afternoon really had their work cut out at 1000 yards. There were not many TR scores above 70, and even the F Classers were dropping a point or two.

Fazal Mohideen completed a fine weekend with victory in the Lt. Governor's closely followed by Keith Cunningham. Bob Pastor, that amiable "mongoose muncher", almost ruled the F Class, winning that part of the Lt. Governor's and most of the major aggregates.

Mike Wong Shui also had a very good weekend, winning the Mercer Aggregate in convincing style.

A noticeable feature was the excellent performance of many of the cadets. In many events, they took the class medals ahead of more senior experts and sharpshooters.

All in all, the matches ran very well, in great conditions for shooting.
