ORA Annual Matches Results
Day 1, Friday
The 124th Annual Matches of the Ontario Rifle Association got underway at Mons Range, CFB Borden, on Friday 12 August. Nearly 120 shooters are competing in Target Rifle and F Classes, and will be joined by a further group shooting Service Rifle on Saturday. Shooters from Ontario are joined by others from Bermuda, England and the USA. There is also a very large group of Cadets from Canadian and the UK.
The weather offered a mixed bag all day: showers in the morning, quite heavy at times; dryer in the afternoon but with a wind that was variously described as "devilish", "easy", "fickle" and "devious" - changing from left to right quite rapidly. Needless to say, the longer ranges were fired in these more difficult conditions in the afternoon.
Roger Mullin, Cobourg, ON, won the day's TR Aggregate, dropping just one point in scoring 199.20. He was closely followed by Roger Romses, Newmarket, ON, 198.23, and Scott Murray, Arnprior, ON, 197.19.
In the individual matches:
Gibson, 300 yds: TR Jack McKellar, Kars, ON, 50.9; F Class, a three way tie to be shot off tomorrow between John Ingoldsby, Caledon East ON, Terry Perkins, Kincardine, ON, and Bob Pastor, Gobles, MI, each with a perfect 60.
Bankers' 500 yds: TR, a four way tie between Pat Vamplew, Whitby, Des Vamplew, Scarborough, Gary Bowman, Mississauga, and Tom Maynard, Merlin, all on 50.8; F Class a tie between Bob Pastor and Terry Perkins, both with 60.
President's 900 yds: TR 1st place, Roger Romses, 50.8; F class Bob Pastor, 60.
Long Branch 1000 yds: TR Roger Mullin 50.5; F class a three way tie between Heinz Vollenweider, Richmond Hill, Norm Barber, Inglewood, and Bill Vincent , Georgetown, each with 57.
The forecast for Saturday is much better, so we hope for the best. The day's shooting will make up the first part of the Lt. Governor's Prize.
Day 2, Saturday
No rain today, in spite of the predictions of the 'experts'. It became fairly warm and humid in the afternoon, but mostly sunny with a light breeze. The latter, unlike yesterday's wind, was described as 'benign', 'changeable', 'unreadable', 'the lightest of zephyrs' - you can take your pick!
Four matches were fired, each counting towards Part 1 of the Lieutenant Governor's Prize. Scores were again high, with tie-shoots being required to sort out the winners in both TR and F Classes.
Tait, 300 yards: TR, Des Vamplew had a perfect score of 50.10 - a rare occurrence; F Class, Carol Bullock, Cheltenham, Ontario, and Terry Perkins, Kincardine, are tied with perfect 60s and must tie shoot.
Brassey, 500 yards: TR, a tie between Des Vamplew and Bill Molnar, Kanata, Ontario, on 50.8; F Class, Gordon Ogg, Waterloo, Ontario, was the outright winner with 59.
Macdonald Stewart, 600 yards: TR, Scott Murray, Arnprior, wins it with 50.8; F class, a three-way tie on 59 between Gordon Ogg, Norm Barber, Inglewood, and Don McGinnis, Penetanguishene.
John Brick, 900 yards: TR, Roger Romses scored his second long range win with 50.5; F Class, Bob Pastor put them all in to score 60.
Long Range Aggregate: TR, Roger Romses, 148.19. Scott Murray, 148.15, Roger Mullin, 148.13; F Class Bob Pastor, 176, Heinz Vollenweider, 173, Norm Barber, 172.
Saturday Aggregate and Lt. Governor's Part 1: TR, Dan Stanoev, Whitby, Ontario, 199.18, Des Vamplew, 198.28, Scott Murray, 198.24 - last qualifying score to make the final 40 was 189.8; F Class, Gordon Ogg, 234, Bob Pastor, 231, and John Kajfes, 230 - last qualifying score to make the final 6 was 226.
In the Mercer Memorial Aggregate, with one range to go: TR, Roger Mullin, 347.35, Scott Murray, 346.37, Roger Romses, 344.37; F Class, Norm Barber and Bob Pastor each have 407, John Kajfes is on 400.
Also shooting today, was a group of service rifle competitors, who fired alongside the main matches at 300, 500 and 600 yards. Eric Greer, Richmond Hill, won the service aggregate.
Over 50 attended the annual BBQ dinner at the Red Pine Motel this evening - an enjoyable and convivial evening.
The forecast for Sunday is good, so we can anticipate a fine final day of shooting.
Day 3, Sunday.
Scott Murray of Arnprior, Ontario, was the big winner on the final day of the 124th ORA Annual Matches. Scott won the Lt. Governor's Match and the Mercer Memorial Aggregate - the two most prestigious events of the meeting.
Rain in the morning soon tapered off, with the rest of the day partly sunny and warm, with a changeable breeze.
