The ORA held the Service Rifle Clinic at CFB Borden on Saturday April 24. The clinic was organized by Tim Kagetsu, with Keith Cunninham and Linda Miller from MilCun Marksmanship Complex running the program. Attendance was very good and the weather was sunny and dry, if a little cool. Everyone had a good time and we couldn't choose fewer pictures.

Here's the classroom session, a short lecture on Marksmanship Principles:

Here's Tim, managing to get a couple of shots fired in between being host, organizer, registrar, and RSO:

Just to show that Service Rifle includes a broad spectrum of arms, here's a 303 that hasn't been fired since 1953:

Here's the other end of the spectrum, a really modern/recent service rifle:

Keith and Linda demonstrated and coached all of the shooting positions, and all of the effective variations in each. Here's Keith showing one of the many versions of the sitting position:

Barney Guotaco enjoyed his day, and found magic for his sitting position... ask him about it!

This is the cradle position, really popular with folks who can do the "pretzel":

And for those who are Yoga masters, here's the "boot position":

Here's a pretty classic-looking kneeling position:

And here's the alternate way to sit on the foot:

|
And just in case you thought you had to use a service rifle in these positions, here's the kneeling position with a precision rifle:

The squatting position is not used by many, but it is legal and a few people tried it:

And the standing position:

At the end of the day, we asked each participant to tell us what they learned.
|
|
At the end of the day, we asked each participant to tell us what they learned. The answers were enthusiastic and widely varied, but probably the most common comments were these:
- I learned to separate the sight picture from squeezing the trigger;
- I finally got a position that works;
- I learned what it is I need to practice, and I learned that I can practice it at home.
By the time we got home, we were delighted to have already received several messages from the participants, expressing their thanks. Keith and I really enjoyed our day, and we hope the ORA invites us back next year for another Service Rifle Clinic.
Best regards,
Keith & Linda
