ORA Fall Matches - Kingston

7/8 Sept 02

At the ORA Annual General Meeting, February last, a wise decision was made to re-activate the Fall Matches at Kingston, after a moratorium of three years. The matches were planned from Toronto with Fazal Mohideen initiating the project. The man on the field was selected among the horde of volunteers but unfortunately for Peter Westlake, he was nabbed before he could reach the door.

When the time approached for matches, so did the due date for Fazal's wife Carmen, expecting twins. Peter also was caught napping on dates, as there was something he could not miss on that week-end. To fill the gap, Bill Hall touched up his contact list and got the local authorities on side, Bill Molnar got the target faces & supplies from DCRA, Scott Murray loaded & transported the target frames from Ottawa, Pat Vamplew brought down experienced markers and your scribe managed accommodations, stats and gap-filling.

Barriefield Range located at CFB Kingston is one of the best kept ranges in Ontario, if not Canada. No surprise if you have ever been to Barriefield Range, the domain of Bill Hall.

The range is well groomed. The butts are spotless, with not even weeds growing by the racks. The target sheds could be re-titled target repositories as there are holders & sleeves for all the targets, weights, wedges and patches. A place for everything and everything has a place. You'll not find anything in shambles or any clutter lying around. The place is drill square spotless or as our Navy man Jeff Jenkins would say "ship shape".

Most out-of-town competitors stayed at military barracks, at a very reasonable rate and had access to the dining hall which supplied excellent fare, for the price of $6.00 for the most expensive meal. The ranges are three kilometres from downtown Kingston, where the "Limestone City" has a charm all of it's own.

The weekend was sunny and very hot with record breaking temperatures in the 30's. The good news is that there was a cooling wind. The bad news is that cooling wind was fluctuating and angling.

The Saturday start was the John Brick Match with 2/15 at 300 & 600. The T.R. match winner was Serge Bissonnette with a 150/150-14v and the "F" Class laurels went to Jim Thompson with a 150/150-26v. Down the line, it was gratifying to see Des Vamplew coaching his young son Tim at his first match. .

In the afternoon, the Barriefield Match, a 2/10 affair at 500 & 600 yds was completed. The Vamplew brothers were at their usual squabbling best with Pat and Des tying but Pat edged Des by having more V's (one) at the 600 yd stage. Heinz Vollenweider, one of our Swiss Rifle Club members complimented his eye-catching rifle with a 100/100 - 12v, the "F" Class top score.

On Sunday morning, Des Vamplew tore into the Cataraqui Match, a 2/10 at 300 & 500 yds., starting with a 50 - 10v at 300yds. This left him limping in with his diminished score of 50 -7v at 500 yds., for a score of 100/100 - 17v as the high score. Dave Steed from Kingston took the "F" Class with 100/100 - 14v.

The Kingston Match, a 2/15'r on Sunday afternoon at 600 yds, rounds out the Grand. Jeff Jenkins finally got his shooting stick in order with a score of 75 - 7v. Jim Thompson finished as he started the weekend with the "F Class notch of 74 - 8v, edging out Dave Steed on a count back.

The prize presentation was honoured by the presence of Mrs. Jo Brick, Dr. Mike Walker and his wife, the incomparable Mary. It was good to see old friends, who are keeping active. Mike alleges to be slowing down but not enough to stop him travelling to Thailand, again, in the very near future. Mary is very committed to her choir group and travels extensively with them. Jo Brick does not let the moss grow under her feet, as she also has the travel bug.

The winner of the Grand was Scott Murray and as you can see by the results, it was a close affair with the first four competitors, being only one point behind the shooter ahead of them. Jim Thompson won the "F" Class.
